L-Carnitine Boosts Athletic Performance

L-Carnitine is a vitamin-like nutrient that occurs naturally in the body where it helps turn fat into energy. A study published in the Journal of Physiology suggests that supplementing L-Carnitine with carbohydrates over time can provide a boost in athletic performance. Researchers recruited 14 healthy male volunteers in their mid-20s and had them cycle for 30 minutes at 50% of capacity. Weeks later, they repeated this performance at 80% of maximum effort. The riders who supplemented with 2 grams of L-Carnitine and 80 grams of carbs twice a day for 24 weeks used 55% less muscle glycogen during the 50% effort. At 80% of capacity, muscle activation for the L-Carnitine group was 38% higher. Both results were compared to subjects who got only carbohydrates without the L-Carnitine. True Strength Moment: Having more muscle glycogen available to fuel intense exercise can be a valuable asset to any type of athlete. So can ON’s new all-in-one workout recovery formula.
